Warren Buffett has long been considered one of the world’s best investors. Yet despite his enviable reputation, the Sage of Omaha’s more recent track record suggests he may be starting to lose his way (Ben Martin writes).

Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate he leads, has been underperforming Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 stock index. It emerged last week that Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s $300 billion sovereign wealth fund, had cut its stake in Berkshire. Should other investors follow suit?

Mr Buffett, who turns 90 this month, is quite rightly regarded as a legend. Since he took control of the group in 1965, its stock has delivered average annual returns of about 20 per cent, far outstripping the S&P 500 over the same period.
